21/07/2010 - Lottery Announces New Fund for Young Carers

Youth in Focus is a new £30 million initiative for projects working with young carers and other vulnerable young people in England.

The programme will support projects helping young carers who look after family members affected by illness and are frequently responsible for their households, including shopping and cleaning.

The scheme will also help vulnerable young people aged 15 to 25 gain access to education, housing, healthcare and employment. Young offenders leaving institutions will also be supported in developing life skills and accessing services.

Sanjay Dighe, Chair of BIG’s England Committee, said:

“The funding we’re announcing today will help thousands of young people across England who are experiencing some very difficult circumstances and lack the normal support from families and friends that other young people receive.

“We want to fund projects that will offer support, improve these young people’s self-confidence and offer practical solutions for the challenges they face.  We want our funding to help these young people make positive life transitions, helping them to lead active and fulfilling lives.”

Application forms will be available on the Big Lottery website from September 2010, when a number of briefing events for interested applicants will also be held.
